According to the fashion house Coco Chanel designed the famous logo herself in 1925, finding inspiration from the geometric patterns of stained-glass windows of a chapel in Aubazine, a monastery where Chanel grew up and spent most of her childhood.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER 

The legendary Coco Chanel was a champion of costume jewellery mixing fine and costume pieces together. She was one of the most influential fashion icons of all time. During a very brief career as a cabaret singer, Chanel performed in clubs in Vichy and Moulins where she was nicknamed “Coco.”  In the 1930`s Chanel partnered with Duke Fulco de Vedura, of Verdura Jewellery to launch a collection of timeless designs including byzantine styled jewellery that Chanel later introduced into her collections.
Chanel costume jewellery, is generally bold in design, gold plated with distinctive colouring. Her iconic CC `s seen on so many of her creations was her interpretation of a stained glass window in the Aubazine Abbey, Correze, in France where she spent her early years in its orphanage.  Venice was a place that became Gabrielle Chanel’s major source of inspiration outside of France. The tarnished gold in the Byzantine mosaics added distinct character to her creations. The emblem of the city was the lion - a favorite motif for Chanel jacket buttons, bag clasps and jewelry. The lion was also the symbol for her star sign.
